“The Keystone of the Masonic Arch”

About Royal Arch Masonry

Royal Arch Masonry is an important part of the Masonic family and, in many traditions, is regarded as the completion of the Master Mason degree. Royal Arch Masons meet in a body called a Chapter, where the single degree of Royal Arch Mason is conferred, exploring themes of discovery, restoration, and the recovery of that which was lost.

In the Royal Arch, the candidate symbolically returns to the ruins of an ancient temple and participates in the uncovering of long-buried truths. The teachings emphasize fidelity to duty, reverence for the divine, and the importance of inner rebuilding and renewal.

Place in Freemasonry

In many jurisdictions, the Royal Arch is considered a natural continuation of Craft Masonry. It deepens the lessons introduced in the symbolic degrees, particularly those related to the search for light, the nature of truth, and the significance of the Divine Name.

Core themes

  • Light from darkness: Emerging from ignorance into understanding.
  • Loss and recovery: The search for that which has been lost and its restoration.
  • Spiritual building: Rebuilding the inner temple and strengthening character.

History and symbolism

Historical background

The Royal Arch degree emerged in the eighteenth century as Freemasonry evolved and expanded its system of degrees. Over time, it came to be recognized in many countries as an integral part of the broader Masonic system and is now a distinct order in most major Masonic jurisdictions.

While scholars differ on the exact origin of the Royal Arch, most agree that it developed gradually, drawing from earlier degrees, historical motifs, and biblical narratives. Today, it stands as one of the most symbolically rich bodies in Freemasonry.

Symbolic imagery

Royal Arch Masonry makes extensive use of the image of a completed arch supported by pillars, centered by a keystone, with a concealed vault beneath. Within this vault is placed the Ark of the Covenant, teaching that the most sacred truths are often hidden deep within, waiting to be rediscovered through patient and faithful labor.

These symbols challenge the Companion to look beyond the surface of life, to search within for meaning, and to undertake the work of self-improvement one stone at a time.
